Another Example of Web Information Quality

Not too long ago, I posted an article about the errors in medical information on the web. Here’s a horror story about Wikipedia, which has become a de facto information standard for much of the Internet. In this story, John Seigenthaler tells about his attempts to change grotesque lies about him in Wikipedia. Unfortunately, a lot of other sites used Wikipedia as their source for information, often repeating the Wikipedia entries verbatim. It’s quite a cautionary tale, both for those who have a web presence and for those who uncritically rely on the web for information.

Very scary, thoroughly believable. Some brave new world.
There are probably good reasons the providers are protected and protective. There are probably good reasons for a “democratic” encyclopedia. But the users, teachers especially, have to be aware that it can’t be trusted.
